How do I Know I am at Risk of Stroke or Heart Attack?

Look for Blockages in the Neck and Legs

It is critical to find those patients most at risk, who need the most aggressive prevention.  Our screening program uses ultrasound of the vessels to the neck and uses the blood pressure in your arms and legs.  The neck ultrasound finds whether you can make blockages by measuring the thickness of the vessel wall. If thick, the wall already has blockages forming.  This ability to form blockages means you can form blockages not only in your head vessel, but also the vessels in your heart, legs and eyes. If the blood pressure in the legs is low, it means you have formed blockages in the vessels to your legs.

What is the Best Way to Find Out if I Could Die Suddenly From a Ruptured Artery in my Abdomen?

Do an Ultrasound

When the artery in your abdomen enlarges, called an aneurysm, it is more likely to rupture. When you rupture an artery in your abdomen, you are likely to die >80% of the time.  The best way to avoid this is to operate before you rupture the artery. But a doctor’s examination has been shown to be a poor way to find these aneurysms.  A brief and very safe ultrasound of this artery, called the Aorta, is the best test to find aneurysms.

How Do I Find Out if My Bones are Thin and at Risk of Fracture?

Get a DEXA Scan

The DEXA scan is the gold standard for screening and measuring improvement in bone density.  It is covered by most insurance for postmenopausal women over age 65 or those at high risk for fracture.  For others, screening may provide useful information motivating you to preserve the bone density that you have left with Citacal Plus with Vitamin D.

Insurance Does Not Cover Most Screening Tests

Most insurance, in particular Medicare, do not pay for many needed screening tests that we think you need.  This is why we developed this program for you.

Risk Factor Modification

  • We aggressively lower cholesterol.  We can arrest progression and regress atherosclerotic vascular disease by lowering the total cholesterol under 150, with LDL "Bad Cholesterol" under 70.  This occurs by arresting Lipooxygenase activity that the oxidizes dense small LDL creating Oxidized LDL "Very Bad Cholesterol." This can be done with diet and/or potent Statins like Crestor.
  • We encourage cessation of smoking.  Practical reality testing and new drugs like Chantix allow the majority to be motivated and successfully stop smoking.
  • Exercise.  30 minutes daily or 45 minutes three times a week of exercise at the intensity of shortness of breath really works.
  • Hypertension Control. We have never failed to control anybodies blood pressure--and we are not about to start to fail.  Agressive use of diet modification, weight loss and combination drugs do control blood pressure in all.  Serial Echocardiograms can demonstrate the need for blood pressure control and reversal of the increased heart muscle mass that can lead to heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure and in ten years Dementia.
